Friends Transmission problem
Need Assistane. A friend of mine who doesn't have a computer is relying on me to find out about their transmission. They have a 1994 Mazda Protoge with an automatic transmission. Today while at the gas station they went to put the car into drive (from park) and a LOUD grinding sound came from the transmission. People came running to the car thinking she was trying to start the car when the car was already running (starter sound). She tried a couple times and each time people would yell at her to stop turning on the car. Only did they WATCH her as she just put the car into drive from park while her foot was on the brake pedal did they realize it was a transmisson problem and not the starter being run.
BCAA was called and they experimented and it seems that it only occurs during it's move either INTO or passed reverse. Either from park to drive (thru reverse), or drive to park (thru reverse) or just into reverse. BCAA showed her that there is a bypass switch on the shifter console that you remove the cap and press the button with a screw driver and you can switch the gears. As long as she pressed this bypass button before hand and then she can go thru the gears without ANY problems.
BCAA mentioned a couple ideas of the reason for the problems.
1. Stop-light switch
2. P-range switch
3. Shift lock accuator
After she got home, now the car is completely stuck and won't go into any gears at all. The shifter is stuck in park no matter if the bypass is clicked or not.
Any ideas???

it's not going to be a switch i have been working on this acrua integra that sounds like it has the same problem with the gear shift leaver stuck in park if she starts the car and pushes a screw driver in that gear release hole will it move or is it stuck stuck?

It Was grinding whenever she went into or passed reverse. And was shown the bypass button which she never knew of. It fixed the grinding but when she got home and went to move the car again, now the shifter is stuck in park and won't move out of it no matter what.

Transmission shop says they changed a fuse (but won't tell her which) and says it fixed it.
Course the shop also said she needed new brakes, new belt, new waterpump, PVC valve, and steering pump, oh.. and an oil change.
Course that was completely a lie since she keeps all her paper work and the oil change was done 3 months ago, steering pump and water pump were replaced 8 months ago, and the PVC valve was changed along with the belt with the tune-up she had 6 months ago.
What is this fuse that he is talking about that fixed the problem? or so he claims?
