I just got a Protege -94 and I was wondering if anyone knows what the thing before the kat is, mine is broken, and i'm wwondering if I can replace it with a solid pipe, or if I actually need that thing... and what t.h. is it...

What does it look like? Think you may be talking about the flex pipe. Kind of looks like a pipe but made of flexible metal wires all woven together? Yes you do need this and no you cannot replace with solid pipe as it will break in short order. That is why that pipe is made to be flexible to allow for engine movement.
