Default EGR Valve SCAM

This is my first post, so please forgive me if I seem like I don't know how these forums work, because I don't! I have a 2001 Protege, 2.2. I just had to have an EGR replaced, which I found out is something to do with the emissions system. The thing is, I had my EGR valve replaced a year ago. Mazda warrantees its parts for 12 months/12,000 miles. However, I am over by a few thousand miles, and am out of warranty! The technician at Mazda didn't seemed surprised at all, and led me to believe that this is normal. Does this mean that I will need to replace this $400 part each year??!! Has anyone else had this problem with their Protege?

You said a 2001 Protege 2.2?. If refering to engine size they don't have one. Only a 1.6l and 1.8l available on that year. If you have the 1.6l engine there may be a repair that has nothing to do with replacement of the valve. Let me know and maybe we can get you fixed up. I find it hard to believe that the egr would fail in that short of time unless you are running some really bad gas or a lot of fuel additives.

Well, I am pretty sure it has a 2.2L engine. Anyways, This is the second EGR valve in 13 months that I have had replaced at two separate Mazda dealers. What could be causing this to happen? I never add additives. I usually get regular unleaded gasoline...either Mobil or Shell brand...should I be putting the mid-grade or premium in instead of regular? Does that make any difference? And the technician said that the valve "was stuck open." I'm no mechanic, but why couldn't they just SHUT it? Could it be the way I drive? It is a five speed manual transmission, if that makes a difference.

Umm...I hope the above price is quoted for parts and labor.

Otherwise, this mechanic is not only shady, but...ripping you off on the price of parts.

BP6F-20-300 - 1.6 liter - $200.45

FSY1-20-300-9U - 2.0 liter - $140.93

Yes, they did make the 2.0 liter engine for the Protoge in 2001.
