Crazy Speedometer and Instrument Cluster Lights
I have a 2003 Protege, automatic w/o ABS. Two issues: 1) The speedometer registers zero most of the time. Some times it freaks out and shows wild speeds. My wife swears it did a complete 360 going past 140 MPH then settleing back to zero.
2) The insturment cluster illumination lights not working. Tested bulbs for continuity and got OK readings. But, there are only two bulbs back there. The third (smaller) one is missing. So I switched one warning bulb into the open socket but still noting. All warning lights operate. I also tested the incoming wiring harness for voltage and read around 12 volts. Thank you for any help. |
Probably will have to replace the cluster.

I bet there is a printed circuit board inside the cluster and it has bad solder points. There are a bunch of companies that will repair these. Google for instrument cluster repair.
