My car has a hard time accelarating when i press the gas i know i have an oil leak but that shouldn't have anythingto with it should it? Sometimes it sputters other times it want to die but it doesn't im not sure what it could be? My uncle is a mechanic and says it might some kind of sensor thats not relaying the message to accelarate

I have the same problem but my car does not have any leak, Do you have the check engine light on? Is your car sputtering when you stopping at red light?
I will take my car to mazda dealer this Friday so maybe I can give you the answer.

Whatmodel year are the Protege's that are sputtering and what is the engine size? Different years and engines have various common problems that may be of some help. I take it no check engine lights being on in either case?

i would definitely start with ignition and work my way out. if it is coil ign., get new coils. if it is cap and rotor, get a new cap and rotor. then work your way to wires, then plugs. if that doesn't do any good. just remember that there are only three systems on any motor; air, fuel, and spark. that simple.
