Default Ac dash controls problem

Instant problem....no "gradual going out". 2002 Protoge ES automatic sedan. AC control panel on dash. Now AC runs fine in all fan positions except highest fan setting BUT blower fan will not come on in position except the highest fan setting. In that position the fan runs fine but the AC does not come on. A real Catch 22. Question....bad switch, circuit board, assembly, etc.??? One mechanic told me the whole assembly has to be replaced but he basing this statement on his memory and is not a general mechanic only of good reputation. Is he right or can I just replace a switch? DIY or need a pro to do this? Many thanks for any advice!

Sounds like the blower resistor. Under right side dash. 2 screws and about 40 bucks. When these go out it can indicate excessive blower motor amperage draw, ie worn out brushs in the blower motor.
