91 Protege advice needed from owners of this model
hello all and thanks for looking at my post. i really appreciate the advice that comes from others on this site. I am a 94 626 owner and have had some problems with it, so i am thinking of buying a 91 protege. the guy selling states he just chenged the timing belt and the starter, it has 135k on it automatic . he is asking $1400 for it.
i will take any advice anyone can offer.
does this sound like a fair price?
anything that is typical as far as problems i should look out for or consider berfore buying?
thanks

mazdas are not known for bad transmissions at all. mitsubishi and dodge hold that title. if you look through the forum at some of the threads about clutches, there are some people that have had the same clutch in their cars for 180k miles with no tranny problems. as far as the autos go, if you don't dog on the motor very hard, the tranny should last for a long time. just remember, in an auto, you will tear up the tranny before you tear up the motor.
i would say, in your case, if the car seems well taken care of, you should be able to get a lot more miles out of the tranny before you need work.

thanks again, i really thought that about the trans in these cars cause i have had a few mechanics tell me that they go in these cars very easy, but more so the autos than the manuals , which i guess explains why i have 175k on my 626 5 speed. However irt has a very hard to diagnose no starting prob right now.
anyway like i said its most appreciated.

Kelly Blue Book puts the value anywhere from $1000-1700. $1700 would be a perfect car w.no dents/mechanical issues.
