Default 2001 Protege Radio Screen

The LCD display on my stock radio is faulty somehow.

Symptoms:
  • When it's very cold out and I first start the car, most of the characters are visible on the radio (but not all).
  • The display can be made better or worse by pushing on the screen in different places. I find the top right works most effectively.
  • As the car heats up so does the radio, disproportionately so, and the screen is all but blank on the radio. The left side of the radio seems the warmest to the touch.

Does anyone know how to fix this? or what might be causing it?
If not, any good/cheap radio replacement suggestions?

Depending on where in the world you are try E-Bay or similar sites for a second hand unit even you local Mazda wrecker. Otherwise buy a cheap aftermarket stereo.

Ok decided to try and take out my radio but it wont come out of the @#$^ dash. I'm using four of the ford (mazda) din keys on it so it should work, but it doesn't!
