Default 2001 Mazda Protege Problems

Hey,
I have a 2001 Mazda protege and the check engine light came on. It has always been so good on fuel and now that has all gone down hill. It's eating up gas. Help!

I was doing my research and googled the O2 sensor. It really sounds like the problem my car is having. I am just wondering if I replace the O2 sensor, do I replace the catalytic converter as well?

Did you find out what code caused the CEL to light up? any auto zone or advance auto store can read codes for free. Find out what the code is before throwing $$$$$$ at the problem

I took my car in and had it scanned. The code was for a a MAP (manifold absolute pressure/aka engine vacuum) sensor fault.
Help
what does this mean?

if u go to advanced auto, its $117(tax included)
i had the same problem but i need a new downpipe and cat, so check engine light is still on, im just gonna get the vibrant performance downpipe-back exhaust for $750 rather than pay the $800 just for a factory cat and $130 for the downpipe

Before you do anything, do check the air hose. I had the same result from the scan and it turned out that age of the air hose cause it to have a big break in it and thereby causing engine to run poorly. If you do not want to spend the money for new air hose (~ $54), duct tape it, one of the many uses of duct tape.
