Default 1995 mazda protege- NO SPARK ISSUE

Hey guys, I have a 1995 mazda protege 1.5L that won't start. I don't have a spark tester. So, I took the #1 spark plug out and plugged it back into the wire. Then I sat the plug on the metal valve cover. I turned the car over and got no spark. Does anybody know where the ignition module, or ignition coil is located on these cars? Not sure if it even has a coil? Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks a lot
Adam

Not sure if it even has a coil? hehe no, the 95 proteges dont have coils at all.....just kidding!

Yes, so you are having a no spark situation ehh? Well, if you have a timing light. You can use that as well to test. BUT I REALLY recommend buying a tester to check it. They dont cost much, I bought mines for $7 at Autozone. I think you need a better ground than the valve cover, use another part. Perhaps the bolt area of the hood rod. Maybe widen the gap of plug to make the spark easier to see.

Oh the other thing. The coil is located IN (yes, IN) the distributer just below (so to speak) the rotor and cap. Sadly if coil is bad, I believe the whole distributer needs to be replaced. But its easy to get used. 95s are older cars now.

Awesome, thank you fueledbymusic. Went down and bought a tester and going to check it out, planning on replacing the distributor now.
