Default 1990 protege awd

im looking at a 1990 protege awd 4 disc brakes with a new tranny (57% rear) with 1.8l engine its being sold for 1900 bucks...however i would like to build up a rally car. in the past i have found this car to be pretty reliable and sturdy. but im not sure of its potential never owning a mazda. i recently bought a celica hoping the same thing but i found the part hard to find and not too much available for that year being 1990.
whats everyones opinion on this car, is there a certain motor to look for, tranny etc. it is a 4 door but that doesnt bother me i want something to push ...something to play with in snow, mud and pavement. i have also found that maybe this car might be a good price because of its name...its not a mustang or supra or rx7 and anyone know the weight of this car...i read 2600 lbs but that seems real light for a awd...maybe thats the 2 wheel drive.
thanks for the help. i need it

oh yea...the SOHC is it any good...if the car is just single is it easy to change a head for one with DOHC ..i wouldnt think so...

If what I remember hearing is correct, the tranny is weak and not a good candidate for any kind of modding. I know of another site that may be able to help you further.
