Default 01' protege crackling, static noises from audio system

Recently my car stereo has been making very annyoying static and loud crackling noises. Similer to thunderstorm static on an am frequency. This also started during a recent heat wave we are having in the northeast. Does anyone know why and what to do to correct the problem.
Could it be my unit is starting to give out?

check the antennae connection at the radio and your actual antennae. Is the radio still grounded? Speaker wire connections still tight? Is it on every radio station?

if still factory speakers because of age the surround the keeps the cone in line may be cracked or broken or completely gone causing it to short, if u have replaced speakers the terminals could be shorting out on the inside of the door skin. hope this helps, have been an installer for several yrs and see problems like this all the time.
