Default Valve stem seals

Hey howzit goin. I just bought a 1990 B2200. After sitting a few days it blows blue so I think the seals for the valves need doing. Has anyone done them without removing the head? What kind of valve spring compressor do I need to get. I can keep the valves up with air. Thanks.

You should be able to find a spring compressor that uses the rocker shafts as a fulcrum to pull down on the retainers or something like that. I think Advanced Auto Parts has one in their lending program.

Well I finished doing the seals the other day. It wasnt to hard to do. I used a kd2078 compressor which worked ok. Not much air pressure is needed to keep the valves closed, maybe 10 or 20 lbs and it stays pressurized long enuff to get the spring back on even if you take to long fiddling with the keepers. A 3/8 drive 13 mm socket is the right size to tap the seals into place. One thing I did was put the cam gear back on after removing the rocker shaft. With the belt in place you can rotate the engine and watch the rotor to see when tdc is reached for that cylinder. You could use a long screwdriver thru the plug hole and rotate the engine to get tdc also, but I didnt have any help so it was easier to hook the belt back up. Hope this helps anyone thinking of doing the same thing.

Default 87B2200 valve keepers

Hello,
I am attempting to install my valve keepers using compressed air to hold the valve in place. How much did you need to compress the valve spring to get enough room to install the keepers?
I have used several lisle spring compressors but I can not get enough room against the valve shaft to slide the keepers into place.
How did you install the valve keepers?

I also was not able to get keepers back on with such compressor mainly due to the dual springs.
Anyway, my B2200 still smoked with brand new FelPro seals, and I later had the entire engine completely remanufactured. It needed cylinders to be bored and 0.020 oversize pistons.

I removed the head and took it to a machine shop. The dual springs are what make this tough.

Hi Cusser,
I think you have the right idea. I will get a head gasket kit for this truck and use the traditional valve compressor with the head off. Dang.
I agree the dual valves are impossible to compress. I thought this was going to be simple and I can't even replace a single valve seal.
