Ive looked for this issue in the forum without results, sorry if it is a duplicate.

My truck will run on high idle (cold start) but as soon as it is taken off, the engine dies. The fuel filter was changed.

Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

could be a vacuum leak, check the vacuum lines, power assist, (if you have power brakes) and the intake manafold and the carburater mounting bolts/nuts.

 

take some wd40 and spray it around the carb and intake when the engine is running and if it idles up wherever you are spraying is where the leak will be try that first

 

EGR gauranteed

 

Should have taken up on the guarantee... EGR valve change and carb kit. No difference at all.... any other ideas? I need help, this one is killing me...

 

theres two solinoids on top of the carb, check them with 12 volts to see if you can hear them click. if it don't click it needs replaced. hope this helps.

 

The slow fuel-cut solonoid opens the idle circuit. It is common for that circuit to clog. I remove them and clean the circuit with carb spray and check the solonoid operation. Should have 12 volts to the solonoid with the key on. There is also a micro switch on the base of the carb linkage that tells the ECU it is at idle/off idle that commonly sticks.

 

Thanks!!!!! That worked. Don't know if it was electrical or mechanical. But I took them apart again. Tested the idle components, solenoid & switch. Put it back together and now its running.

 

I may have spoke too soon. Upon cleaning the drive after the work, I found the spring for the idle shut-off solenoid laying on the pavement. That would tell me theshut off is not closing. Does this answer anything or just confuse the issue?

 

The slow fuel cut-off solonoid contains a spring behind a rod. When 12 volts is applied it sucks the rod back opening the port to idle. Without the spring it should still idle, it may not close the port however which could cause it to diesel.
