89 Mazda MX6 GT Automatic Non-start Issue
One of the 1st generation MX6 GT's I have is an automatic that is experiencing a no-start issue. It is getting both fuel and spark and the engine does turnover so I have a decent footing in the things it needs to startup. Also, since it's an automatic car and all of the gear indicators lights weren't showing up on the instrument cluster, I went ahead and replaced the inhibitor switch with a brand new factory one, with very limited success. What I mean by that is that all gears now light up on the cluster, but still no start. I don't think it is out of range situation as when I shift it into reverse the backup lights come on as they should. Oddly enough, it will crank in park, but not in neutral as is should so there could still be a range issue. Now for a potentially more damning thing, the dreaded hold light is flashing on the cluster next to the gear indicator lights. I have no way of pulling the trans codes on it either ( not the same as how engine codes are pulled ) and knowing what codes there are may be the secret to why the car won't start or maybe not. The one thing I haven't done yet is a compression test. But given that this car ran, according to the previous owner, until the no-start issue arose then dirt low compression doesn't necessarily make sense, but it's still a possibility.
The car itself is in good condition with about 165k miles on it. The turbo is good, but from reading the receipts I found in the glove box it (the turbo) or the engine/ or both was using some oil.
I have a theory that maybe the flexplate is worn, but have had no past experience with that particular issue so I am clueless there. One other thing, I noticed last night when I was messing around with it that when I turned on the headlights, the gear indicator lights went out ( yes, I checked and cleaned the grounds on top of the transmission ). I don't know how that issue there fits into the lack of starting, but it's worth throwing out there. Thanks for any suggestions.

Turned out to be loose cylinder head bolts causing an extreme low compression situation. Upon thinking about it, and have the parts available, I decided to convert it to a manual transmission and also had the motor rebuilt...it's now the best of both worlds.
