Default engine fans

babyhuey,

Our 2003 MPV still runs well, but the engine fans are revving up with the AC and then STAY revved up--sometimes even after the ignition is turned off. I'm fairly sure it's their RPM's that are up and not the idle speed. The engine temp never rises past the midpoint. Any tips on what I should be looking for?

Oh--they seem to always be running--shouldn't they turn off now and then? (We have two fans, I assume one is the oil cooler with the 4-seasons package).

Default RE: engine fans

Hey sprybot,
Sure does sound like a fault in the fan control module if the fans are running constantly, erratic, or the fan speed seems to vary up and down with no apparant reason. Big problem with them and Mazda even introduced a SSP #60or Special Service Program to just replace the module on 02-03 MPV and 03-04 Mazda 6 for problems just as you describe. See link below for SSP. Do you remember if this has been completed on your MPV? If unsure and want me to check and see, then PM with at least last 8 digits of VIN and will check for you and save trip to dealer. If not, would be a free module replace and even if it had been then Mazda will probably replace for you.
The fan module is mounted onto the drivers side cooling fan, right next to the air cleaner housing. Module is about 5 inches square, black metal cover on back side, and side facing the radiator is silver aluminum and bumpy looking heat sinks on it. A good check to see if it is causing a problem is to give the module a light rap with hammer or screwdriver handle when the fans are acting up. If the fan speed changes or stops after the impact then module is definitely at fault.
