Default check engine ligt

I own a 2005 Mazda MPV with 53,600 miles on it. The check engine light has been on for a week. What are some things that I can try to see if it will go off before taking it to the shop. My friend advises disconnecting & reconnecting the battery.

I believe that my gas cap (it wasn't on tight) triggered the light.

I appreciate any type of help. The car has to be inspected before the end of the month.

Go to an autoparts store and borrow their code reader.(should be free)The fact that the CEL is on means you've tripped a code. You need to know what code to understand the problem.

A loose gas cap can cause this.
