try listening for vacuum leaks. use a garden hose and follow hoses with one end while listening in the other.
I'm no expert, but you could also disconnect certain vacuum hose points from their little plastic connectors and see if there is suction by wetting your finger and seeing if your finger sticks to the vacuum hose. start at the vacuum hose solenoid on the passenger rear side of the engine compartment. at least that is what I gather from other postings. Search the forum for VACUUM and you should find a few postings that you might find helpful.
Try calling your local mazda dealer. Say something like... you're thinking about buying a used millenia and ask first how much they charge just to put it up on a lift and check it out for you. Then tell them your problem and see if it rings a bell with them. Ask them how much that kind of problem usually costs to fix. Chances are they've seen the problem before and they will give you a fairly decent estimate over the phone. The mazda dealer may have to take the manifold cover off and track down the leak so I think labor costs would be fairly high. If you were lucky enough to find the leak or had some REAL help on this forum from someone who knew what they were talking about, you could get by with about $5-10.00 in vacuum hose tubing and connectors.
Hope this points you in the right direction.
