Default Mazda 2.3L Miller engine supercharger replacement

Jon Bond Performance is new to this forum. Our company would like to gauge interest in the demand for those requiring maintenance and or repair of their IHI supercharger mounted to the 2.3L Miller cycle engine.

We receive many calls lately from Mazda Miller engine owners relating to problems with the IHI Supercharger. Chances are if you have not had a failure, you know someone who has. To add to the misery, replacement cost is rather steep and rebuilding choices are limited and seem somewhat un-reliable.

The problem with rebuilding these units is that the bearings and seals are proprietary. This means that custom bearings and seals need to be manufactured at a high investment cost. High investment cost means high parts cost. Since this unit is oil fed in the front and the rear, this also means twice the number of seals to fail and twice the cost to rebuild. The cost to do so will be rather high to our standards at about $600 to $700 USD compared to other models of superchargers. Add in the above average rebuild labor for these units, and we are looking at a full rebuild cost of $1,800 USD or better. The design issues with the IHI supercharger is that it spins at the limit which requires a good oil supply. The IHI has oil chambers and arteries surrounding the case. These arteries clog or gain deposits which slowly choke off the oil supply. Seal failure soon follows. To add to it, the oil is always heating the supercharger walls and contributing to a higher than normal temperature of the intake charge. Why rebuild an expensive and poor design when you can upgrade it for less than the same cost!

JBP along with another name brand company (announced soon), are working to bring a replacement supercharger kit that

• Reliable
• Economical
• Self contained oil supply
• Very common name brand USA made 1.4L supercharger
• Lower discharge temperatures
• Can be installed with simple automotive tools
• No changes required in ECM, spark or fuel system
• Cost less to purchase than a rebuild of the IHI

Default mazda milenia

I have a mazda millenia 2000 and I have problems with MAZDA MILLENIA S IHI SUPERCHARGER MILLER CYCLE 2.3L and and commented as repair is expensive and I wonder if there is any cheaper option to repair my car

I also have a 99 millennia S and has been sitting since 2007. one day the oil light was flashing and after I checked the oil there was almost none in the there..i put a few quarts in and about 5 min down the road I had a lot of smoke and the car just died. im 98% sure its needs a replacement supercharger luckily I have a good buddy who is a mechanic that can help me install a new one. I just want to know if its worth putting in a reman. and if so can you direct me to one? I really want to fix this car badly..but my concern is that it would just happen again. thanks

this is the only place that sells a reman compressor for the 2.3:

because of the labor, i would not be interested in installing an aftermarket, and the lack of response from the original poster makes me even more leery. however, resale value of a very nice 99 is about what a pse costs. then you have labor. and, if your 99 has not had regular maintenance, it is probably due for stuff like hoses, valve cover gaskets, water pump, axles, and more. easily another 1000$ in parts, and at least that in labor. we have 2 99 s', both with right at about 150k, both compressors are still in excellent condition. so, with the proper maintenance, they should easily go to 200k. i would not put 2k in either car, i would just junk it. or donate it, and take the tax writeoff.

Please note that I have not responded as I was unaware that anyone even responded to this account. The question was from over 1.5 years ago on the IHI Supercharger.

I would agree with Keninn. The cost to properly support this car would never be spent by anyone unless the car had extreme sentimental value. JBP is not supporting this supercharger, nor are we supporting a build for this vehicle due to lack of interest.

Default Did the product ever launch and is it still on the market?

My 03 millennia has recently had the supercharger take a dump. It still works but rattles like hell. if u could drop a link for the new product if it ever launched it's be greatly appreciated. Or anybody who knows of an alternative to the flawed OEM version. Thank you.
