Default Fuel capacity question

I've experience some strange things with my 2000 S in the short time I've owned it. I'm begining to think the radio reception issue is tied to the rear window, because the rear defogger doesn't work very well either!

Anyway, I'm here to ask about the fuel capacity of these cars. Everywhere I've read online says 17.9 Gallons. First off, the gauge does not read accurately....it gets to empty "E" after about 300 miles. Upon filling up at this point, the car took only 12.5 gallons of fuel. Next time, I ran it for about 400 miles, and it took almost 16 gallons. Next tank, I went 413 miles and ran out on the side of the road....

I know the gauge is obviously off, but I find it hard to believe that my mileage is varying 40-50 miles worth from tank to tank with similar driving conditions. Any ideas?

I am in the process of changing the front downstream O2 sensor out to hopefully get a new cat....Then I'll be down to the radio/defroster issues, and the fuel gauge.

Thanks in advance.

Eric

If a tank is rated 17.9 gallons then you will never get 17.9 gallons into it. The fuel pump pickup tube is above the bottom of the fuel tank and the fuel has to reach it or it sucks air so considering the width/length of the tank there is still a couple gallons in the tank when you run out. Varying gas mileage can be attributed to lots of things. Quality/octane of the fuel/driving conditions/driving habits/dirty injectors/airfilter/tire pressure/lots more.

Yeah, I'm not sure I believe that. I understand that the pickup line for the fuel pump is not on the bottom of the tank. Other vehicles I have owned have used much closer to all the fuel in the tank. Two gallons sloshing around in the bottom not getting used is rediculous; half a gallon perhaps, not two gallons.

My 2001 Millenia S also has several gallons more fuel in thetank than I expect for the gauge reading. The warning light comes on at 1/4 tank and around 300 miles. The needle acts a little funny below 1/4. I generally fill around 325 miles and put in 13 gallons. Don't think I'll run it past 400to see when it runs out. I don't think this is a very well calibrated gauge.

My gauge seems off, too. First of all, it never goes to the top, only to about 7/8 full. I refill at 1/4 tank and have never put in more than 9 gallons. First time I got 16.7 mpg, then after lots of engine work, 22.2 mpg, mostly highway. Is that all I can expect?

01 Millenia S, 122k miles. Drove 380 miles on tank. Gauge read empty. Removed back seat. Removed two sender units. They both have to be plugged in for gauge reading. If one is unplugged gauge reads below E. Sender unitat centerof car is at top of tank. Moving arm from top to bottom moves gauge 3/4 of tank. Sender unit on driver's side is lower in tank. Moving arm moves gauge 1/4 of tank. Warning light always comes on at 1/4 on gauge. I bent the arm on center sender so gauge reads just above E. Filled tank. Put in 16.1 gal. the most ever. Reads above F.

Don't remove driver's side sender if tank has more than 2-3 gal. It will overflow.

Car gets pretty steady 25 mpg.Has leaking supercharger. Has turned on Check engine light twice in 25k miles. Both times when driving steady 45 mph.

98 Millenia 2.5L, has 118K on it. I was driving to NYC one day so i filled my tank all the way (the guage was on the lowest mark, but the light wasn't on). It took in almost 12 gallons of gas and when i got home (all highway miles) i ended up with 320 miles and the light came on. Everywhere i read it said that the car takes in 18 gallons, is my guage broken? help.

I'm having the same problem. A fill-up never takes more than 12 gallons, the guage never goes higher than 3/4. My mpg has been all over the place because of a head gasket leak which has just been fixed ($$$$$!). When I bought it last fall (97 base model) I got 20-22mpg, then after about 1000 miles the check engine light went crazy and it took a little while (and a change of mechanics) to find the problem. At that point I got 16mpg. Now I'm on the first tank after the repair, so I hope it improves. But I still have the problem of the gas guage. After spending all that money I really want my milly to be perfect.
