I have a 1995 Miata that I bought about a year ago. The Driver's side power windows were always slow, but last week I rolled it down, and it now will not come back up.

The window switch makes a noise if the windows to go down (and it allowed the window to go down), but there is no noise if I put the switch in the "up" position (and of course, it's now stuck in the down position).

I took off the door panel to get access to the motor and tried to manually raise the window, but was unable to do it. It looks like the motor itself contains the mechanism for raising the window.

A couple of questions:

Is it possible to raise the window manually?

Do I have to replace the motor, or is there another way to fix this problem by rearranging the wiring (I saw something to this effect on another site)?

it is possibly a one piece unit with the rails in the motor as one, and if that is the case, it may get pricey..i would check around salvage yards...

 

You have two seperate problems with your power window.

1. Slow to go down and up. The rails the window rides on becomes stiff and brittle causing excessive resistance to operation. A silicon lubercant or something like "Graf-Kote" , a spray on grafite will reduce friction and allow the window to move faster. Just squirt it in the window channels - enough to allow it to drip down the length of the channel and the window will work better.

2. The window goes down but not up. The motor works by current traveling one way or the other, running the motor in clock ways or counter clockways. The up-down switch just sends the current in opposite directions. If it works one way, it will work the other. As there is no sound when the switch is pressed, I would suggest the switch is not activating a current in the up direction. Check the switch and the wiring to the motor.

zobeit right with the switch theory. When your window gets slow to operate, it is dragging and cause a large increase in amperage needed to raise the window especially. This increase in current needed to operate the window motor thru the switch creates a lot more heat and a bigger electrical arc when the switch is released and damages the contacts in the switch. If you do replace the switch make sure that you also repair the slow window or the new switch won't live long either.

 

I had the same problem with my 2000 miata. My problem was a cable that pulls the window up was catching on a part of the door frame, and not allowing the window to go up. while trying to go up with the switch the motor burned out.

I replaced the switch and made some sort of hold down clamp for the cable. and it works fine now.

I had to replace both sides in my 1990. I got an aftermarket for the driver side, but had to buy the Mazda unit for the passanger side. one was 300 the other 400 as I recall. Not something I would tackle but if your good with puzzles, maybe you could do it.
