Default Roaring/growling noise 91 Miata

Greetings.

I have a roaring noise that appears to be coming from the rear of my 91 Miata. In gear, clutch in, coasting in neutral or sharply cutting the wheel left or right seems not to change the noise. The noise seems to start at 35 and become most pronounced at 40 mph. I have replaced both rear wheel bearings. (same noise same speed). Any info or insight would be appreciated.

How does the rear differential oil look? Clean and clear or black/metallic?

It looked ok and not burnt as I remember. I changed the diff oil about 2 years ago. It has been making the same noise for about 3 years now. Really annoying with the top up.
