Homelink disable?
Hey all,
Due to increased theft and other "activity" in and around our neighborhood, I got to wondering about the Homelink garage door opener buttons built in to the mirror on our '14 CX-9 Grand Touring model.
It occurred to me that it would be waaaay to easy for a bad guy to get into our garage if we needed to park the Mazda outside for some reason. Yes, they would need to know where the buttons are located, and which of the 3 buttons is for the garage door. Both quite easy to figure out, but I was thinking that if the key fob was not nearby that those buttons would not function. WRONG!!
Even with the car locked (with the key fob) and the key fob nowhere near the car, the garage door opener still works normally! Not a good security "feature".
Question: is there any kind of a "hack" to make the Homelink buttons non functional without the key fob?
I have to park my truck out front and don't have the Homelink buttons programmed for this very reason. I have a opener remote that I keep locked in a ConsoleVault for this very reason. TIA for any feedback on this.

The Homelink feature on any vehicle that offers it is more of a convenience than a security feature. I find it very handy, without having to keep a separate remote to open/close the garage door. But you're right, it CAN be a security flaw when operable without the fob nearby. I'm not aware of any vehicle where you can "hack" the presence of a key fob to be required to enable Homelink. Maybe the best way for you is to reset the mirror and thereby disassociate your garage door opener from it and just keep the garage door remote handy?
That is the "easy" solution that I am leaning towards. I'm quite surprised that the folks at Mazda didn't see this as a major security "fail"...and one that would have been easy to avoid simply by providing power to the Homelink buttons with an "ignition on" power source rather than one that is always hot. Or with just the key fob nearby. Might be easier to do it with the ignition actually on as the power source rather than programming the remote to enable the feature (if that makes sense?).
Gonna do a bit more research to see if that is do-able...
