Fast Depreciation
Hi all 👋 my first post here, and I wanted to ask you if you monitor how your car's value is changing over time.
I'm in the US and bought my 2018 CX-9 in January 2022 with 15,000 miles for $27,500. That very day Carmax was offering 29 grand for it and KBB was saying I could sell it for 31 grand privately. Sounded like a great deal.
I've been monitoring those values about once a month since, and starting in May or so they started declining sharply. I now have 37,000 miles with no accidents or mechanical problems, and the CarMax offer dropped to 19k and KBB private sale value to 23k.
I don't see any decline in retail prices though.
Is this a Mazda thing? Have you experienced anything like it? Would you mind sharing your purchase price and current values?
Thank you.

It is not a Mazda problem it is an economic market problem of supply and demand. Supply of new cars was way down pushing all prices up. Demand is now down and supply is increasing. Used car prices were over priced for the past 2 years. I have one car that the trade in value was more than I paid new 6 years ago new. They were crazy times. That was the only time I didn't regret checking the value of my cars.
In normal times, Cars depreciate. A used car has to be worth less then a new car with no wear on the tires, brakes, and so on. Enjoy your Mazda and keep it along time and don't punish yourself by checking the value.
