Default Changing from HID to Halogen headlights. Am I nuts?

I have a 2014 Grand Touring with HID (Xenon) headlights. To me they never worked great, but I lived with them until one burned out.

I replaced the bulb ($129 for one) but installed it wrong, causing it to melt the headlight assembly. Now it won't hold the bulb in place. A new assembly costs $650 to $800.

I got an idea. Why not replace both assemblies with halogen versions? They cost much less and I believe they would work better. My mechanic said it couldn't be done because the wiring is different. But from what I can see, it's similar except for the ballasts and igniters, which can be removed or bypassed.

Has anyone here tried replacing HIDs with halogen headlights? What issues did you encounter?
