Default Cable attached to brake pedal switch

Hello,

What is this cable attached to the side of the Brake Pedal Switch. On my car, the little black cartridge came undone, the cable fell out, and I don't know how to reassemble it. What is it and what does it do? How to reassemble it?

Let me be more specific.

I can see that one end of the cable goes to the shifter and the other end goes to something in the steering wheel surround, possibly the cruise control module.
The middle has a cartridge attached to the brake pedal. That cartridge snaps open and there is a spring inside with an exposed cable. How does that come back all correctly assembled?

Should just buy a new one?

OK update with newish problem.

I was able to replace the pedal switch, and reassemble the cable cartridge to look identical to a new one. Now, I can start the engine but I cannot shut the ignition to the OFF position. I think the car cannot sense the position of the shift cable lock to indicate that the shifter is in Park. Is there an adjustment to be made at the shift console?

I solved the problem so here is the last posting for future reference.

1. This version of CX-9, unlike the CX-5, does not have a P function switch box. It has a cable attached to the brake pedal and the ignition switch that tells the switch "I'm in park" so the switch will return to OFF position and let all the electricals shut off. It's all mechanical.
2. The end of the cable at the ignition switch has come loose from its position. Removing the steering column surround revealed that end being loose. Carefully snapping it back in place (no need to remove the cable end), lets the switch return to OFF again.

Problem solved. 30 minutes.
