My suggestion is to take to the dealer if you can.... the first time I tried to fix i broke the fitting that holds the light in place. To replace the whole assembly is over $200.... needless to say i did not replace the assembly... I just keep replacing the bulb. the easiest way i have found is to do this.... blocks the rear wheels, take off the front tire, be sure to use extra support under the frame (DO NOT rely on the jack itself - TOO Dangerous), remove the wheel well cover, slip the boot cover off of the light, carefully turn and remove the bulb fitting - then you can replace the bulb - then reassemble. The little screws that hold in the fender well cover pop in and expand when you return the screw...they can break or you may have to use a flathead screwdriver to pop out... hope all this helps... it is a pain but it saves $40 or so dollars at the dealer.

rodneylynn1977, how did you repair the assembly? Mine is also broken and the dealership wants to charge me $875 to replace.

To change the headlight bulb you remove the plastic guard liner and access the bulb from inside the wheel arch.

Since my car was still under warranty, and the service rep didn't tell me the headlight bulb was actually under warranty the dealer decided to replace the headlight assembly for me for free. I did have to pay for $50 in labor, but I was definitely ok with that.

Pays to have a great dealership...

OK, here's what I did to solve the broken headlight assembly issue:

1. Remove bumper: https://youtu.be/2RrITZSop6E
2. Headlight Assembly removal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=radfd9Xtucg
Text version: How To: Mazda 6 Front Bumper Removal First Gen | Happy Wrenching

THEN, I took the assembly over to the local auto body guys, who know which epoxy to use for the thermoplastic that the little part which breaks... $25 later, I had a working headlight assembly and reinstalled.

Posting here to help others, and to ideally get Mazda to reduce the price of their parts. Even the aftermarket guys are very expensive...

Good luck, Dave
