Default CX-7 Blower not Blowing

I'm working on a 2008 CX-7 with the automatic climate control for a friend of mine. The blower was being loud so I pulled it out and tried to clean it with some electric motor cleaner. When I put it back together and in the car, the motor wouldn't turn, and there was a small amount of smoke coming from the motor. We got a new blower motor but that won't turn on either. I know I got in over my head and should have just had her buy a new one in the first place, but it's too late for that. I have checked the blower fuse and the relay, both are fine. I would like to test the "resistor" but because the automatic climate control, Mazda's service manual says there is an "MOS FET" instead. Is anyone aware of any testing procedures for this part or what my next course of action should be? Thanks in advance.
