Question When Does CX-5 Sig Start in CarPlay versus Mazda Infotainment?

Sometimes when I get in my CX-5 and plug in my phone, I'm dumped into CarPlay immediately. The podcasts begin playing, I see my map application, etc. Other times, I'm staring at the Mazda Infotainment menu thing, and have to press and hold the "home" button to get it to switch over to CarPlay.

I've yet to figure out what the pattern is. I leave my phone plugged in all the time until I shut off the car, so every car trip ends on "CarPlay" mode.

Is there a pattern here? I'd love to just have CarPlay come up every time. It's set to "Always Enable," so it's not a pairing or permissions thing. What determines this? I looked in the manual - did I miss something?

Does anyone know?

P.S. 2021 CX-5 Signature

just a guess but it may be your phone doing it rather than the vehicle. I bet Android is putting AA into deep sleep and it's just taking it a while longer to wake up.

Have you noticed a difference in behavior when getting back in after a short stop versus going longer between trips?

That's my best guess.

No, I haven't. Today, for the first drive of the day, right into CarPlay. It had sat since 7pm yesterday. I haven't found a pattern yet.

(It's CarPlay for me, iOS 14.4, no Android stuff here.)

In my '19 GTR, Carplay will automatically start up when the phone is plugged in IF I HAD CARPLAY ON THE LAST TIME I DROVE THE CAR.

If I was on the Mazda Nav, or Sirius last time in the car, Carplay will not auto start. I have to select it.

I would think that would be the way, too.

I'm never NOT in CarPlay except the times it doesn't turn on first when I get in the car and start driving. And those times, I hold the button down to switch it over to CarPlay within 30 seconds of starting my drive.

It wasn't in CarPlay this morning. I had to click-hold the home button to get it to switch to it. My iPhone was playing a podcast, I plugged it in, I turned the car on, the podcast switched to the car, I put my car in reverse… and when I switched to Drive and hit the "OK" button for the warning, it was in the Infotainment screen. I had to click-hold the button to get my CarPlay screen up.

Nothing's broken, I'm just trying to figure out the pattern. Does it go to the Mazda stuff if I put the car in gear too quickly after turning it on? I'm pretty sure it's not when I drive instead of go into reverse (drive doesn't turn the cameras on like reverse does)… because I'm pretty sure some times it's come right to CarPlay when I back out of my garage in the morning.

When I shut the car off, every time, CarPlay is active or "on."

I never use the car's stuff. I never want to.
