Default What is this rusty part? (2024 CX-5 GT)

Hi, I live in the GTA area of Ontario. I bought a brand new 2024 CX-5 GT from a Mazda dealer last October. Today, when I opened the hood and found a rusty part (see attached pictures). What is this? Why is it so rusty on such a new car? Do I need to repair/replace it? If I do, should it be covered by the warranty? Thank you!

I believe this is your high-pressure fuel pump.
I'd leave it in place and just clean it up with a product that will not damage rubber/plastic.
I would use steel wool, small wire bristle brush or even a Dremel tool with wire brush and then brush some metal primer color of your choice on it and paint it a color if you wish.
Or you can purchase a whole new one for $469 that will look just like that after one winter the choice is yours

Good luck.

But this is a new car that has only been driven for more than half a year, and there are parts that are not exposed to the outside that are rusted so badly, which is unreasonable and feels that there is a quality problem. I have another car that has been driven for more than 10 years and has always been parked outside and has never had such a problem

Dude
First did you look at where the OP lives. Big clue about some parts that are not painted or having a specialized coating applied that may be exposed to humidity DUH! NOT the auto manufactures problem BTW! Then di d you even look at the rest of the engine compartment? Hmmm clue there about how the new owners keeps things clean and protected? Did you ask when the purchase was made how long they owned it and how many miles are currently on the odometer also if he went to Mazda and had them look at the part?
Nope you just posted like a 2 year old.

I do not recommend that you do the cleaning suggested it may affect any future warranty. It is not a quality problem, but you would be prudent to at least go to your Mazda dealership and have the service department see the concern and hopefully get it on your VIN history.

Sorry to say your concerns are not uncommon from owners of vehicles of all platforms not only Mazda.
Just because you claim your other vehcle in the city and country is outside does not have surface rust is very unlikely and would be rare. We are not all idiots on this forum but love to read the exception to the norms it is always entertaining!

My suggestion is clean your engine compartment a little more often than the NONE you have done since you purchased the new Mazda. At least once a year minimum. While it will not prevent rusting on more area's then that one part it will reduce that issues as well as other issues frequently caused from owners thinking that the only time you lift the hood is to check the fluids and get a battery jumped that went bad. LOL

the bottom line is your Mazda is very much under warranty so joining and starting a thread or participating on a thread that your complaint should be directed to your Mazda dealership is so counterproductive and serves no real purpose giving that looking at 3 other Mazda forums you are the first to complain about this? (disclaimer the subject is ridicules so I did not do a complete comprehensive search on other forums a waste of time! )LOL

BTW what the heck is all the semi white powder all over the engine compartment? Oh and there is evidence in one of your pictures of fluid likely water the did get other part wet? and also other interesting part weathering? If I had to guess without knowing the complete history I would suggest the hood was left open for more than a few hours … more like a few days?

I live on the coast of Maine and the road salt along with the ocean fog will do this to most bare metal.
It is the chemical nature of metal oxidation.
My CX-5 air intake tube clamps were rusted after 4 months.
I took them off, cleaned them and painted them and they still look fine nearly 5 years later.

Update.
I talked to the dealer and they said they noticed other owners had the same problem, mainly in late 2023 and 2024 models. Previous models didn't seem to have this problem. They suggested opening a case first and reporting it to the manufacturer to find out the cause. If replace it now, it's likely to have the same quality and the same problem. Wait and see...

Wording is everything. I am not sure why the person you talked to suggested that this was common for those years based on the shere number of that part manufactured and that is fits many models in years and those same models sent world wide.. And that there is no mazda official report of the concern for the cosmetic appearance of that part. There was NO problem only an observed condition of the outside of a part. Opening a case with Mazda corp that the dealership wants Mazda to pass the bad news not replacing the part because cosmetic of an engine part like that does not influence its operation. besides whomever looked at your engine compartment I am sure saw what a couple other of us saw and just did not want to comment.
However please post the exact Mazda report and or response to this and not your word so we can all read and understand exactly what Mazda dr the dealership decided to do? Not that some of us would not trust you word but.....

And BTW go to a car wash and power wash off your engine compartment.... LOL

Here is you engine compartment . that you stated and I quote "I bought a brand new 2024 CX-5 GT from a Mazda dealer last October." So guessing at the miles based on 1000 miles per month average =7000 miles

Your engine compartment.... and what is that white powdery dust all over everything????

And here is mine at 7 years and almost 60,000 miles. I drive through the Pacific Coastline of Ca and ORE several times a year, I travel into the Sierra mountains during winter and summer months, frequently take and explore dirt roads , and still find a little time in my daily driver to keep the engine compartment clean which reduces wear on parts and also reduces most problems from having a dirty engine compartment. LOL

Oh and before you say anything there are pictures, I posed on this forum of my car many times so dirty it looked BROWN both top and bottom and under side so please don't suggest it is a garage queen.
