Default A trip to the cold city

Hello everyone! on the weekend I am planning a trip in Fairbanks in my CX-5 before I have not traveled to cold cities, we plan to be there for about a week, how do I need to prepare my car for this weather? I am thinking of buying a jump starter for the battery to keep it alive, what can you advise? thank

.

Others will chime in, but get yourself a good tire gauge and tire inflator - which IMHO, should be in your car anyway. The tire pressures will drop significantly and maybe dangerously in that type of weather. If you have SUMMER TIRES - would wither buy a set of winter tires or simply rent another car that did. In any temps below about 40 degrees, let alone temps at zero and below, that rubber will freeze and make be extremely dangerous to drive on. Repeat do not drive up there with summer tires!

I would get a gallon of low temp (-35) window washer fluid. Also and I'm not sure about what oil is in your car, but make sure you have an oil with the proper viscosity for those temps.
Make sure all fluids are filled. Keep a blanket, gloves and a shovel in the trunk.

Good question - but I was assuming based on his profile, that it was Louisiana.

Wow, I didn't think there would be so many things to check and fix,
As for the pump, I have it, but I'm thinking of killing two birds with one stone and taking a compressor with a starter for the battery this guys https://reviewerst.com/jump-starters...ir-compressor/ recommend JNCAIR 1700 and other models, but I decided to stay on it, I have winter tires, but the oil will need to be checked.
Thank you very much for such a detailed answer, u helped me a lot!

So to add to previous comments, here is a bit more advice from an old fart who has driven his car in winter all over western Canada for the past 50+ years....
1. Get your cx5 into a mechanic for a winter preparation service... most critically check the coolant to make sure you have protection against freezing the engine block down to -35 degrees... your oil is likely ok but get fresh oil change for the journey (0W20 synthetic for the nonturbo or 5W30 synthetic for the turbo engine as per your manual)... check the battery for cold weather service... and drain and replace windshield washer with the stuff for -35.

2. Tires.. previous comments apply, but regardless of which tires you have, if you have little to none winter driving experience then do not attempt to drive on highway mountain passes with snow covering the road surface... you just will not know how to react to slippery conditions.. and you will encounter these...

3. Assuming you plan to drive north through Canada, British Columbia has winter tire requirements on major highways during winter months... if it is snowing and you do not have adequate winter tires the police can stop you and turn you back in the direction you came from

4. Good to have a winter survival kit with you in case of road blockage... blankets, warm clothing, etc

5. And now there is Covid... so at the Canadian border you will have to convince authorities that you have a valid reason to travel through Canada to get to Alaska... the only reason accepted that I am aware of is an Alaskan resident is returning home.... no sightseeing or visiting along the way.

Have a safe journey... but seriously consider waiting a few months for better road conditions and maybe reduced covid restrictions..

^ Lots of good recommendations.

As for emergency supplies in a car that's going to be taken through great distances, particularly during the winter months in "winter" country: definitely add at least a couple gallons of water and some non-spoiling foodstuffs. Blankets, flares, a decent first-aid kit, water, some food, several pairs of socks, good winter gloves and hat, etc. Double-check the cell phone; ensure your battery's relatively recent and you've got your charging cables for the phone.

Stick to the "major" roadways, as well. Getting stuck in a bad spot can occasionally result in hours (possibly days) before getting un-stuck and back to "civilization." You never know. But getting stuck on a reasonably well-populated highway will generally mean you've got help mere minutes away, if things get bad.

3283 miles in the winter... good luck.
A number of people have experience much rock damage to the front of their vehicles going thru Yukon & Alaska, even in summer.
One week stay in Fairbanks noes not seem to be worthy of the amount of driving time to get there.
