Default road trip gas mileage

Approx.... 2100 mile road trip....1300 miles on the interstate in the 70-75 mph range (except for the ubiquitous orange comes in interstate work zones where no one ever seems to be working) and the remaining on state highways where the limit is 55 - 60 with many 35 - 45 areas and a few stop lights through small towns. My 2016 CX-5 was loaded with about 200 pounds of stuff. MPG was per the on board computer which I have checked and found to a little lower than actual. Temperature was 40's to 70's. According to the computer:

33.4 MPG for the trip.

Not too bad.

Those aren't work areas - they just need a place to store the cones.

LOL......actually, one time I did see several "workers" in one of those zones. They were sitting on a bench drinking some sort of beverage....far from the cones.

Is your's an AWD? I live in Montana where all the driving is as you described. Wide open spaces and some minor stop and go and I'm only averaging 24 mpg. I'm beginning to think something is wrong with the vehicle.

Montana has high(er) speed limits than the standard EPA highway test cycle ... and increased speed decreases MPG substantively. Ditto for uphill. Ditto for brisk acceleration. Ditto for Sport-mode for urban driving.

Example: My F150 Lariat 4x4 gets 16.2 MPG at 85MPH (eastern Montana). At 60MPH, I routinely see 22.9 MPG. All measurements made by the Trip Computer.

Default hills

That must run through Glacier Park which I grant you has hills. However I drove east to west across Montana once and the rest of the state is flatter than a pancake.

Western Montana has serious mountains:

But the state is already full, no room for newcomers!
