replace front bumper cover = reprogram sensors?
I recently ran over a big hunk of truck tire retread in my 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring. It took a chunk out of the bottom of the bumper cover. When I got a repair estimate, I was told the bumper cover basically covers the whole front of the car and would have to be replaced. The estimator also said this would necessitate removing the grill. He said if the car has adaptive cruise control, it may not work (cruise control would work, just not the speed/following distance function). If that's the case, the car would have to be reprogrammed at a cost of $400-$500. Is this true or is the shop looking to pad the repair?

But why not turn in under your insurance...and pay the deductibles? It should be covered by comprehensive/collision.
Also the insurance estimator will make sure no extras are included that arent necessary.
And everything including the re-programming would be covered under insurance.
If there is only damaged to the bottom of the bumper, and no structural tweaks to the front support then nothing will need aligning or re-programming. as the Radar is mounted to the support panel/frame and not the grill or bumper.
This a pure case of why the old routine use to be get 3 estimates.
In the situation that sensors are involved you would want a body shop that has a good reputation with insurance companies to give accurate and true estimates. You may want to call your insurance agent and ask there to advise where to get your estimate done.

what did you end up doing?
I ended up submitting a claim to my insurance company. I compared the insurance estimate to the estimate I got initially and they were very close. There was no sensor estimate needed, though the insurance estimator said he had seen it be needed in more serious accidents.
