Default Question about airbag light

I have a 2020 CX-5. I'm pretty sure that when I first got it, and there was nobody in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag light would light up above the climate stuff and then fade out after 5-10 seconds. Now, it lights up and does not fade out. It stays bright red all the time. It does go out when someone is in the passenger seat. I asked about it a the dealership and they said it was working properly and should have always stayed on as long as the passenger seat is empty. I called another dealership and they said they weren't sure and I'd need to bring it in.

The manual isn't 100% clear on how it should function. I'm looking for some feedback from other CX-5 owners. How does yours work?

That safety system needs to be looked at by MAZDA ASAP.
Simply put.......NO ONE should speculate, guess or assume anything when it comes to the SAFETY RETRAINT SYTEM on a vehicle.
When a customer calls having to do with the SRS I ask if the vehicle is still under warranty and if so tell them to take it to their DEALER ASAP. If it is not under warranty I tell them to bring it to us or another shop ASAP and try not to continue to drive until it gets looked at!

Thanks for the reply. I did take it in to the dealer where I purchased the car. I guess my ongoing problem is that I think they just blew me off and told me it was all OK. And when I called another dealership, they didn't know how it was supposed to work. I'll pursue it with the service department, but am asking other CX-5 owners to share how their system works so I can have some information.

I really wish a Mazda professional who actually knows how it's supposed to work will respond. And if they tell me the light is supposed to stay on, then I'll just relax and live with the irritation.

Call the dealership ask for the SERVICE MANAGER, (GET THIER NAME AND SAY IT AT LEAST TWICE (3 TIMES IS REALLY TIMES BETTER) TO THEM SO THEY KNOW YOU KNOW WHOM YOU ARE TALKING TO) tell that person what is going on. if they have no answer they will ask there resident MAZDA Certified Technician.

I called them and they were very nice. I was told that the light staying on is normal. I will assume that my memory was simply wrong. Thanks for the suggestion and replies.

Mazda changed their Air bag system a while ago. Previously, regardless of how many passengers were in the vehicle, in a crash it would activate all the airbags & seatbelt pretensioners. Now if the system doesn't detect the passenger seat is occupied it will disable the passenger Air bag & seatbelt pre-tensioner in a crash.

I also believe in some markets the passenger airbag can be deactivated by the customer to enable the fitment of a rearward facing baby set/capsule in the front seat. Hence the need for that warning light.

That light its however very confusing & annoying.

This is happening to me currently and the dealership keeps saying it is supposed to be on. Then why was it off since I bought the car? Did you ever find a solution?

It is still the same. It stays on when nobody is in the passenger seat. The dealership insists it is normal and that's the way it is supposed to work. 🤷🏼‍♂️
