Default New 2024 cx5 with 4000km. Some questions

Hey all
We got a 2024 cx5 NA 2.5L in August brand new. For the most part, we really like it, but do have some questions. Wondering if you can help us out

1. Does your cx5 NA burn any oil? We are down about 1/2 to 2/3 of a quart in the first 4000km. Is this normal?

2. For the first 2-3000km, there was a sitting burning smell outside the car. It's not rubber or anything...I am not sure what it is. It is still faint there, but much fainter now. Anyone else experience this on a brand new cx5?

Do you guys have any play in the steering wheel? Ours feels loose if you turn it back and forth a bit quickly. My other Mazda (2013 Mazda 3) didn't have this? Is there a bit of play in the cx5 steering wheel?

Thanks all!
Cheers

#2 see thread link below...depending on the smell you are talking about it may go away after some time...mine did...smelled like burnt tires a little...never brought it to a dealer...

i have no play in my steering wheel...did an early oil change at 3k miles but did not measure what came out cause i don't know what went in...my second oil change i hope to see approx. 5 qt come out as that is what i put in...

If you suspect that you are losing or burning oil go to the dealer and have it looked at. 9 times out of 10 owners are incorrect about their assumptions on this !
If the Mazda was new not used and you smell unaccustomed scents, it is either normal for a NEW vehcle or better go to the dealer and have them check out your Mazda ASAP!
You are comparing 2 different Mazda's for steering actuations. Once again if you are concern this should be addressed ASAP at the Mazda dealer you bought the Mazda form...

While it is convenient to ask these things on a forum your answers are very seldom empirical and more feelings than facts. Evey vehcle situation even if it is exactly the same year and model are different.

As long as you are under warranty get these all addressed at the dealership!

Hey there
Thanks for the reply, but I don't THINK that is the smell. I don't notice it at all inside the car.....only outside. It happened on a test drive of another cx-5 as well (that only had 200km on it). But I am still smelling it 4000km later on ours and we got it with 9km on it, (although it's not as strong now).
It's definitely a smell I've never encountered before....

Default One thought...

When I hear that someone is losing oil and that there is a burning smell, do you know what I think?
Have the dealer look for an oil leak.
Then again, it might just be the smell is part of the new car thing that happens as stuff gets burned off (coatings, drips, oversprays, outgassing), as is the case with my new 2025 CX-5 which has unidentifiable weird smells inside and outside.
I am not sure when that stops, but 4000k sounds like a long time for it to be going on, IMHO.
Happy Hunting for answers.

Maybe for your timeline but others can acquire 1500 or more miles a month so 3 months and during winter months when the window are up and the use of the heater? not so many miles when you consider only those very few factors?

Well just found a TSB for the exact shifting issue I am having, so that should take care of that at least. Kind of a relief.

Congrats on the new ride - there is a substance which is applied at the factory for purposes of preserving the vehicle from shipping to sale - Im guessing , ---Back n da day ---Car dealers would refer to the odor as "Cosmoline" and it generally was sprayed on the undercarriage, suspension and engine/trans --Ive see new vehicle after 1st drive smoking slightly - and it eventually burns off - The smell is slightly acrid but not like oil --It should go away pretty fast unless you dont warm the car up and take short trips --may take longer --if it persists - dealer - // On the oil level - I would be very surprised to find that a new skyactive engine is burning 1/2 quart of oil at 3000 miles ( 4000km) - I HAVE NOT read the other replies so - Make sure you check the oil under the same conditions each time - I suggest , If you have a garage- check it before start up cold first thing - on a level surface obviously- Then keep checking it periodically throughout the oil change interval - I find that trying to check it at , the gas station after 10-15 minutes still gives a difficult to read result --- so cold / cold - best
