Default Keys Locked in Car

My daughter left her keys in the car and was locked out. she had to manually use the cargo button to climb into the car. Why did this occur, and how to prevent this again. She has a 2019 CX5.

BTDT. Leaving the key on the console and exiting the vehicle will cause total door lock.
'demand' buttons wont' un-lock the doors and neither will the other key.
Crawling in through the rear hatch is the only way in. Not a great idea for disabled folks like
me.

Complain to Mazda about it. That is one design flaw that needs to be corrected.

If my keys are in the car, the car does not lock by itself when I leave it, the keys do not leave the car as I do not have them on me, but it locks of course if I leave the car WITH the keys.

Leaving the key any where BUT on the console will not lock up the doors. I have left the key on the drivers seat and the
rear seat and the doors won't lock.

How did this happen? Is this the scenario?

1. The keys are inside and you are inside the car
2. You open the door
3. You press the "lock" button on the door
4. You shut the door
5. You are locked out
6. Only button that is functioning is the open hatch button

The place NOT to leave the key/remote is the console. It means the front pocket
near the dashboard. Leave it there, and the doors will lock when you leave the vehicle and
close the door(s). It's even mentioned in the owner's manual.

In this case, can you still unlock the car with your 2nd key/remote?

Nope. Demand buttons and 2nd remote do not work. Crawling in from the rear hatch is the only way in.
It was real fun for me, being disabled and trying to keep the cat from running out of the rear hatch while
climbing over the seat to get to a door handle.
