How long will the water pump on a CX-5 last? I heard the water pump had its own V-belt how long will the v-belt last before needing replacement or should it last until the pump fails?

Preventive maint. on the coolant system is around 100,000mi. maybe less in severe climates (90,000K)?

Coolant is longlife FL22, 10yrs 200,000kms / 120,000 miles. The pump should be for the life of the vehicle. Haven't seen any issues with belts or pumps since their launch in 2012.

It would just be a matter of visual inspections during each service.

Life of the vehicle may be a bit of a stretch, but certainly 100k miles is a reasonable expectation, I’ve spent a lot of time on CX5 forums over the last 6 years and I think I recall only one WP failure. I’ve noticed a few owners replacing the WP belt along with the serpentine belt simply as a precautionary measure.

I'll agree with the 2 previous inputs. Water pumps are usually good for 100-150K miles when the belt tensioner is just right - or at least not too tight to cause premature shaft seal failure and not too loose to cause squealing.. The CX-5 water pump uses a stretch to fit belt - which in some ways is a hassle, but also ensures the tension is nearly perfect.
My experience with other cars made over the last 10 - 15 years is that I have replaced water pumps around 100K. Sometimes it was because I was replacing timing belts. Other times there was a related coolant leak - maybe radiator or seals near the water pump. Thankfully the CX-5 pump is external so not hard to change. Even if the water pump is timing belt or chain driven I find it hard to complain if I'm changing a water pump at 100 - 150K miles. For many people that is the life of the car

Hey All, Mazda CX5 2013 74K miles

I just got my oil changed today and in their recommendations, they stated that my water pump has a leak to it and it needs to be replaced. In addition, they recommended the serpentine belt be replaced as well.

Now, I recently went to another Mazda shop after just replacing the spark plugs and their connectors and something else (filter?) for around 1500 (I know, way too expensive) with labor 2 months ago. My car was making a strange noise when I drove it and they diagnosed it when I had the car towed there. That's where they also did their inspection and there were no more issues then. Come now, and my water pump is leaking? My serpentine belt needs to be replaced? They stated that these need immediate attention (the red highlight in their inspection).

I don't know what to think because I just put in so much on a repair 2 months ago. And this leak occurs? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm trying to see if any of this can be done by myself in my parking garage where I'm living but otherwise, I may need to bite the bullet.

I’d love to hear the story about the $1500 bill for 4 spark plugs and ?
But will try to respond to your question.
Should you replace both accessory belts?
The water pump belt should be replaced every time it is removed- it is a stretch belt. The serpentine belt must come off as part of the repair. You can reuse it But if it is original and if you can afford to then replace it.
Can you do this repair in a parking garage? Don’t know if you have permission, tools and experience. It’s a bit messy. Even if you drain the coolant some will drain out when you replace the pump.

Thanks for the reply. I still trying to figure out if there is actually a leak. I am taking it in for another estimate somewhere else. From what (little) information I am getting, the water pump shouldn't be breaking this early. I am at 74k miles, not 100k miles.

Good luck with the second opinion. That’s a good idea.
However, not a surprise if the water pump seal is leaking after 7 years and 75k miles. Seals age with time and miles. Your car is relatively low miles- most 2013 will have over 100k miles.
