Default Heavy Hood

Hi, all. New member here. Just took delivery on a 2019 CX-5 Signature edition. Went for a short ride in the countryside this evening and averaged 28.2 mpg, per the trip computer, which tickled me with less than 200 miles on the car.

Do have a question. I did my usual new-car tech inspection when I got the car home and was stunned to find the hood is so heavy I could hardly hold it up. It truly must weigh 100#, and I'm sure my wife would be unable to open it if the need arose.

Is this normal for a CX-5, or is my example maybe missing a helper spring or two?

Thanks.

Time to hit the gym Karl!

No stock 'helper springs' or struts. Struts can be added with aftermarket parts though.

The hood should be no heavier than any other new car without extra springs or struts. Is it caught on something?

Stop by a dealer and look at another CX-5. If it is different, ask service to address the problem.

I would have thought the Signature edition would have a button and someone to run out from somewhere to open the hood for you.

It's a pretty good sized hood and made of steel, so it weighs a couple of pounds. You might want to look into hood struts. I bought a pair on EBay a couple of years ago for about $19 and they are great. Just don't drop a nut down into the openings along the side of the engine compartment where you mount the strut. It can be hard to retrieve, even with a remote light and magnetic probe. Don't ask how I know.

I am about 105 pounds and that hood is heavy. I can barely lift it. The hood fell on me today while I was checking my oil and I was almost trapped in the engine compartment. I hurt my elbow and struggled to get the hood off of me. Even when propped by the rod in the correct place the support is dicey and that hood could almost killed a small person like me.

I suggest that all that are having difficulties with the hood to get a pair of hood struts. I understand the leverage priceable, and the MAZDA hood may be difficult to lift the first 10 inches.

If you don't see them listed by any aftermarket CALL THEM DIRECT. I recommend REDLINE HOOD STRUTS

Redline Tuning is in the business to provide our Hood QuickLIFT Systems (gas springs, struts, dampers, lifters) for all vehicles that have an OEM prop rod.

Not all hood struts are equal. In fact many are cheap quality and will blow out in a very short time. Spend a little extra and buy from a company (REDLINE) that has a good reputation, great customer service and if you have any question you don't get a call center but the actual company employee to talk to.

+1 on this. I bought the Redline kit shortly after I got my new 2021 GT in March of 2021. It's more expensive than the ones you'll find on Amazon or eBay but well worth it. I don't get under the hood too often but when I do it's convenient to have it lift so easily and not have to deal with the stand thing.

Ok folks. Just got the Redline kit today. I was easily able to get 3 of the pieces installed, but the fender ball stud for the passenger side refuses to go in. I loosened the bracket on that side to give more clearance and it still won't drop into the hole. Did anyone else have this issue? I didn't measure the two ball studs before installing, but I assume they are the same as the kit only mentions the hood brackets as being specific for each side. I guess I will contact Redline and have them send another ball stud. Very frustrating as I am so close, but can't do the install without both struts in place.

Thanks for the reply. I went out and tried one more time and it finally dropped in. Much trickier on the passenger side then the drivers. Also pretty scary the first time you try to close the hood. They felt like they were not going to let the hood drop. It started to flex a bit and then finally moved.
