Apart from a possible intermittent fault in the system, does any one know the reason why the four clicks on the remote doesn't always open the windows on a hot day.? I really don't think it's an error as it seems to be the timing of how we press?

2024. The feature has been around a long time . Our 2006 Mazda 6 had it , but with just 3 clicks, but that always worked. When we bought the CX5 last year, the salesman did not know that it did it!
We have been using this feature more recently and have found that three swift clicks followed by a slight delay and then a much longer hold down seems to work. It also looks that if it does not work the first time , lock it before you try again!
What baffles me is yes, we have this feature, but why does the manual say "▼ Opening/Closing Windows
The window opens while the switch is pressed and it closes while the switch is pulled up
with the ignition switched ON. Do not open or close 3 or more windows at the same time."?
Those motors use a significant amount of energy and are not fused separately. My opinion as I don't have the actual specs on the amps they use, is they might overload the circuit.
Pretty rare that anyone would put all four windows down or up at the same time in any vehicle.
They actually have 8 legs and two claws (pincher and a crusher) plus 4 pairs of swimmerets on their tails.
So far none have been able to open my vehicle windows and run away before I got them home.
And to this very day none have been able to remove the cover on the pan I cook them in no matter how much they or PITA kick and scream.
Including the ones I cooked up yesterday. Probably because they are vertically challenged and my vehicles or pots aren't underwater.
