OP - congrats. I am sure you will love the CX-5. No matter what trim you buy it still has very nice appointments.
There is clearly different levels of quality with the different Mazda paints. My Dark Blue had no problems in 100,000 miles. I now have Black with no problems in the first 5,000 miles. The red appears to be the most problematic. I wonder if the Gray has issues as well.

After a few years how has the Machine Grey paint held up?

I had a '19 Machine Gray with no PPF and it had lots of chips in 20k miles. I put ppf on my 21 and am glad I did. Nothing so far in 8500 miles. Highly recommend wrapping the entire front bumper, quarter panels and hood. Also mirrors and the A pillars would be helpful (I did not do that).

Good advice. I had PPF put on my last several cars and wouldn't own a car without it. Not a single ping, ding or scratch. In fact, last week I started parking in a new garage (NYC) for work. Second day in, while I was picking my CX-5 up, I noticed significant scratches on the to of the rear bumper - as they banged it into the concrete wall. I went to a local body shop and we took a look - turns out the damage was on the PPF applied to that area of the bumper. All I need do is get another piece of PPF back on there. Estimated charge to repaint the bumper ~ $800.00. Highly recommended if you intend on keeping your car.
