Default Disabling the "manual shift" mode?

I was on a freeway onramp when I started to accelerate, and noticed that the car wouldn't go faster than about 25 MPH even though the tach was up to 6000. I discovered that, somehow, I had put the car into "manual shift" mode by accident. The strange thing about it was, when it first happened, I put it into neutral, then back into what I thought was full-automatic drive, but it went right back into manual shift.

Is there a way to disable this feature - not permanently, but make it pretty much impossible to put it into this mode by accident?

To put the shifter into manual mode, dont you physically have to move the shifter arm to the left. It doesnt just accidentally move.. it has to Be Moved.. ? Just STOP doing THAT. And all is taken care of... It isnt a software related issues.. its a issue of the arm being PHYSICALLY moved..

I realize that. However, apparently it's a little too easy to do it "accidentally". Also, when I move the shifter from manual to neutral and back down, it went right back to manual shift.

Do you rest your hand on the shifter **** or something ? I'm just trying to understand how once you put it in drive and you're not touching the shifter ****. How does the shifter **** get moved by itself into manual mode? Since it physically has to be pushed into that location ?

It sounds to me like there may be something wrong with the gearshift which is not holding it in drive like it is supposed to and like it works for the rest of us. I would take it to a dealer. There might be a part broken. Another option may be to make some kind of contraption keeping the gearshift from physically sliding to the left, however, it is better to have the problem fixed instead of building a work-around.

Obviously, if it is caused by placing something heavy next to the gearshift, you would need to stop doing that, however, I suspect you would have already figured this out by now.

This brings back horrible memories from my past. I had a 96 Dodge Stratus and the manual mode was one notch further than drive. Every month or so, someone would come into my office and tell me that there is something wrong with the car. They would explain the exact scenario you described (using sound effects).

I have the exact same issue on my 2015 CX-5. A light touch of the shifter arm moved it from Drive to Manual. This has happened to me twice (thankfully not on the highway!) and each time, I did nothing more than brush against the shifter arm -- I definitely did not make any direct moves to switch from automatic to manual mode. I love my CX-5, but I think this is a dangerous fault that could easily cause an accident. Did you find a solution to stop this from happening accidently? Thanks!

No, but I keep an eye on the dashboard to make sure it says "D"

Y'know what...don't cop an attitude. Your attitude sucks. I've done this several times. The firt time at a stop light I reached over to the other side of the shifter to change the right side heat setting and when I pulled my hand back I inadvertently bumped the shifter into manual. I barely touched it, so lightly I had no idea it had mover over to "M". It's a lousy design. In my Audi I have to depress the shift **** down just a bit to get it into M. It's impossible to put it there unintentionally...that is a good design. Want to be helpful on a forum...don't cop a ******* attitude.
