Default CX5 tailgate

My 2019 Mazda CX5 tailgate has just started opening partially and stopping. It then freezes and I can open or close it manually but no automatic operation. I've disconnected the earth lead off the battery for 15 minutes but still no cure. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum

So first thing STOP disconnecting and reconnecting your battery. This may cause other problems.
A few service thoughts. But only guessing as to the worst cases.
1) Depending on the miles and usage of your Mazda the alignment of the hatch may be slightly off?
2) The hatch sensor may be failing. The sensor must be removed and tested or replaced?
3) The BCM may be failing this must be tested at a qualified service shop or Mazda service department

My 2020 had a recall for the power liftgate control module and my dealer replaced it.
Not sure what years it was applicable for, but it could cause this type of issue.
However, I never experienced any issue with mine before the replacement and none since.

That's a good response... ^^^^

ALL recalls are on the VIN information available at any Mazda dealership and maybe online? In most states when you transfer ownership of a used vehicle it will show on the VIN history, and most DMV will mention it. If it is a SAFTY recall most states that I am aware of will not even register the vehicle with an open SAFTY recall.

The problem with a 2019 if it not a SAFTY recall then going to a Mazda dealership they will more than likely charge for a diagnostic service. Without a TSB to support that VIN and model and yes Mazda to at least see if the dealership and or Mazda will compensate or give a discount on part and service labor rate is up to them. The 2019 models are out of all the basic warranty with few exceptions.

I looked and found no TSB related for this issue on model 2019. That is not to say there is not one as my ALLData (commercial subscription last updates June 2025) only shows what is updated from the auto manufactures to them relating to service procedures updates like TSBs, safety recalls and service general

The last hatch issue much like described on a 2025 Ford 8 passenger Suburban with less then 6k miles was caused by the plastic liner just slightly touching the hatch door. My larger Auto Technician hopped his butt on the floor of the cargo area to run a continuity test on the hatch sensors and could find one but his butt adjusted the liner. We didn't charge for the service. LOL
