CX-5 or CX-30

CX-5 or CX-30
Hello everyone,
New here, new with Mazdas as well. I am getting a new car and we are deliberating on two mazdas right now. I can get a new 2WD CX-30 with the Skyactive-X but I am also considering a used 2017-2018 CX-5 AWD with the 2.2 Diesel engine with very low mileage.
Fuel consumption is very important in my case with mostly highway miles and I guess both these cars do well in that respect being that the CX-30 has the newer X engine with the M hybrid thing and the CX-5 is, well, a diesel. Is that the case though? We need the practicality hence why we are considering the CX-5, although we could also live with the CX-30, in terms of backseat space and overall practicality.
Ive heard some horror stories about CX5s with diesel engines. Presumably that was pre-2015 though? How are the 2017-2018 2.2 diesel engines?
