Brake Inspection in annual service
Forgive my noobness. I have a 2016 CX-5 AWD which I have had for about 1 year and is due for my 2nd service visit (1st "major" service). It has just under 50,000 km (30,000 miles). They told me on the phone for the service booking (dealer where I purchased) that part of the service is disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, and re-assembling the brakes. I have never heard of this. That is virtually all of the work of fully replacing the brakes (at least, the pads). At my last service 8 months ago the pads were better than 60% remaining. Does this make sense? I'm used to german cars (VWs) and rampant "well, we've done most of the labor by inspecting it so you might as well replace it now" traps. New to Mazdas, although I was pleasantly surprised with how I was treated in my first service.
On one hand, the brakes don't feel quite right since I went on a 2 week holiday and the car sat parked, I think they may have rusted up a bit. So I don't mind having a look at them; it's timely in that regard. But if this is an annually scheduled "gotcha" trap, it would be good to go in armed!
Much appreciated. I promise to go read all the FAQs and new user posts this weekend

Nothing in the service manual about disassembly for a service.
As mentioned above, each service requires " inspect brakes" which is a visual inspection, ( some vehicles require removal of the wheels, others don't ) and assessment on the road test.
Sounds like a money grab.

I suppose the question is what "inspect brakes" means. Does Mazda have a written procedure that tells the dealer this is necessary? If yes, ask to see a copy. If no, was there anything in the visual inspection that indicated the need to disassemble (like uneven pad wear)? I think visual inspection is industry norm & what you described is a very generous interpretation of "inspect brakes" intended to separate you from your cash.
I think you're all right. I will ask questions when I drop it off and let you all know what happens! It might have also been the service appointment person on the phone embellishing out of her ***.
