Default Actual size of petrol tank (Australian vehicle)

We have just bought a 2.5 litre Maxx Sport 2024 run out version.

The manual says that it has a 55 litre petrol tank.

On the road trip home, the dash display said we had 35km of range left when travelling at 100 km/h when we
pulled into a service station.
The manual says not to top off but to stop filling when the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off.
This was at 43 litres with the lever held about half way, so not filling fast.

So what is the actual size of the petrol tank?

Is it 45 litres (usable) or 55 litres (theoretical) as Mazda claims?

It's probably 55, but not all of it may be usable. Just as a side note, I have found the DTE (Distance to Empty) readouts on other vehicles have been pessimistic which is probably a good thing. I once went about 50 miles beyond the DTE on a 2004 Tahoe and still had about two gallons left in the tank by the time I found an open gas station at 3:00 AM.

Mike thanks.

I don't think I want to test the accuracy of the Mazda fuel DtE at 3am in the morning, that could get way too unenjoyable.

Regards
Doug

I wasn't real thrilled to do it with the Tahoe which had a 25 gallon tank, but only got about 16 mpg.

Just for an example, my wife usually drives the CX5 and only for short trips. I just filled it up after a little over a month of her driving. She was averaging 17.8 mpg according to the computer (not unexpected since most of her trips are for a mile or less) and the computer said it had 38 miles left on the tank. It took 11.2 gallons after the second click on the fill up, which means that nominally there were about 4.3 gallons left. I don't mind the computer being a bit pessimistic on this and it sure beats the old 1969 Kharman Ghia I had as a kid where you just ran out and then turned on the 1.5 gallon reserve tank.

In the US, the gas tank is 15.3 gallons which translates to 57.91 litres. I wonder if your tank is really 3 litres smaller than in the US.

I suspect it is the usual "rounding" that all manufacturers do. eg. Selling a motor bike that really has a 997cc engine with 1000cc badge on the petrol tank.

I always fill up when I get around the 1/2 tank mark.
That way I've never run out of gas, cash or maxed out my credit card...
