Mazda Skyactiv technology is very different from other auto manufactures engines and should not be compared to other platforms
As far as I understand the issues arise long after warranty. So if one is concerned, cylinder deactivation device may be installed after warranty expires.

I do not have a mazda with cylinder deactivation. But I do not want to buy one with the feature... It is a deal breaker to me and I am on the market for a car. I'd cautiously buy a new mazda with this feature if I knew I could deactivate the feature if needed.

Mazda has been running cylinder deactivation since 2018 in my market, I'm yet to see any issues arise. Some vehicle we see through our dealership have done well over 250,000kms without issues..

Any modification to the system has far more chances of engine issues.

Sounds much like installing an antivirus deactivation device on a computer.

Agreed. The cylinder deactivation is so smooth on these cars that I can't tell when it's on/off. I also have not seen/heard issues, unlike Honda/Acura where I was petrified of it on my RDX.

@accel, below is the the “Mega Thread” as it’s called addressing *Honda’s* cylinder deactivation issue. In it you will find info on how Honda does cylinder deactivation, all the problems associated with it, why Honda hasn’t addressed it, and the various aftermarket “VCM muzzlers” outlining their features and differences.

As Castillo has pointed out, issues on one engine platform do not necessarily carry over to others. The Skyactive design is entirely different, much more modern and sophisticated, and deactivation does not appear to be an issue with Mazda (I’ve Googled extensively). Undoubtedly they learned from Honda’s failure.

Since installing the muzzler device on my 2011 Odyssey about 6 months ago, my spark plugs have stopped fouling and I haven’t thrown any misfire codes. Gas mileage is slightly better averaged over ~3K miles by 1 mpg but driving habits have changed. The CX-5 is being used more for around town while the Odyssey is more for longer trips now.

My question is why this is even relevant to a CX-5 Mazda forum.
There is zero comparison to the Honda and Mazda engines.

Ya no kidding!!! You wrote what I was thinking!

It took me 2 years to design a performance head and set of cams for my Mazda. And most of that 2 years was learning the technology that is unique only to MAZDA Skyactiv engines!

In my case I was just trying to relay the message that it's not worth messing with it on these cars because it's been perfected and runs smooth. I don't know why someone would want to muzzle a CX-5 lmao .
