2016 Steering Wheel Leather VS 2017+

I have a 2016 CX5 GT. It has, what I would imagine be faux leather on the steering wheel. I have a 2019 Cx9 loaner right now and the steering wheel leather is much more premium. I have also noticed the 2017-2019 CX5's have this, as well. How come they changed it? Just curious if anyone could shed some light on this.

Thanks

The faux leather was crap & would wear out/ fall apart with the 3yr warranty period.

I have noticed that on mine. Especially on the top of the steering wheel. I wonder how the new ones will hold up over time.

I replaced 3 steering wheels under warranty last week.

From what? them getting worn out? Mine is worn out on the top and I asked them to replace it and the tech said this was "normal" and they would not replace it.

Basically they wear out or start peeling due to poor material lifespan.

Take photos of steering wheel, rego plate & odometer & email them to Mazda USA direct.

whats the rego plate? So I email them to Mazda USA direct (vehicle has 35K miles) so I’m almost up then what? How would they replace if the dealer said it’s normal?

grim_reaper 01-09-2019 06:18 AM

Rego plate ie Registration plate or Number plate.

What would emailing Mazda do? I went to my delaership at about 30000 Miles and they just said that it's normal wear and tear. I've noticed it peeling at around 20 though. It would be really great if they could replace it before my warranty expires. What do I do if the dealer says it's.normal

Bypass the dealer, complain direct to Mazda HQ. Hopefully they will take pity on you & replace it under goodwill. Seen it happen many times.

Makes sense. What would be the best email to reach them at ?

So I called today and Mazda corporate told me there is a TSB for this issue. So she called up the dealer and the dealer said as long as I meet the criteria under the TSB they'll replace it. I just cannot exceed 36K. I'm currently at 35,250, so I think I'll be okay until my appointment on the 29th.

Visit your nations Mazda website, look for contact details.

I had the dealer inspect my steering wheel today and they agreed to replace the entire thing. They were very set on my mileage though. I really pushed it at 35,700 lol. I pick up the car tomorrow. I wonder if it will be the same exact steering wheel as before, or have the newer more matte leather steering wheel like the new ones have.

MattMJB0188 01-24-2019 08:40 PM

New steering wheel appears to use a stronger, more premium leather.

Glad it worked out. Yes, the new steering wheel indeed feels premium.

MattMJB0188 01-27-2019 01:25 PM

I have already put a steering wheel cover on it to preserve it, just in case. I also think now that its the same as before, just feels different because its new.

What was the number that you called for this. I'm pushing 35400 miles and would like to see if I can get my peeling steering wheel replaced

grim_reaper 01-27-2019 10:15 PM

Mazda USA really are tight arses on warranty. In my market, until mid last year, warranty was 3yrs unlimited km's. Then it went to 5yrs unlimited kms.

You guys are really hard done by.

My advice is do it NOW. I called two dealers by me and they were both booked a week and I drive so much I couldn’t wait. Had to find a dealer 2 hours away, but they got me in right away and gave me a loaner. They will not do anything if it’s over 36K. Now my dealer was willing to diagnose at 35.700 and then repair after 36. It was all worth it though.

MattMJB0188 01-28-2019 11:21 AM

And at first I called Mazda Corporate and they called the dealer and explained the TSB. Its funny how so many dealers dismiss stuff until you tell them there is a TSB for something.

MattMJB0188 01-28-2019 11:28 AM
