Hi, I have a touring (2.5) 2014 Cx5 for 3 weeks now. Its my first all wheel drive vehicle and so far, so good. One thing I notice and I've driven plenty of different cars for over 15 years now, is that when coasting downhill, the Cx5 doesn't speed up, it almost slows down when coasting down a steep hill. This is so bizarre to me... Does anyone know why?
I've always coasted up to red lights but with this car I need to keep my foot on the gas or I won't make it up to a red light... I emailed mazda and they said to ask my dealer. The dealers don't know jack squat.

1) bearings too tight? (hot?)
2) calipers seizing (i doubt it---new vehicle)
3) it is a high compression engine which aids in slowing down! ---especially if it's a skyactive engine! believe around 13:1 compression ratio. Normal engines range from 8:1 to 10:1 on my 2006.

 

Thanks. It is a skyactiv, I wasn't sure if that had something to do with it... Its funny how it gets good gas mileage (best in any size suv class) and yet it fights through coasting....

 

It's most likely because it downshifted into a lower gear. Mine does that. One of the few things I don't like. Watch your tach next time. RPMS should go up when it happens.

 

I noticed recently on steep hills it would downshift to help slow down but I was lightly braking at the time.

Otherwise mine will seem to want to coast forever on slight declines with my foot off the gas and brake pedal.

 

That's exactly what happens, you tap the brakes and it downshifts.

 

I've noticed my 2006 Mazda 6 automatic do this as well!

 

I am not sure what Mazda calls it, but aren't you describing a fairly common feature in modern automatic transmissions called grade logic control?

 

It's def the compression bc if I pop it in neutral (going downhill) that slight drag, slow down does not happen and it coasts freely. Oh well, I'll get used to it. As long is it gets the good gas mileage I guess I'm ok with it.

 

Downshifts going downhill, increasing control and saving brakes. Much like the skilled driver of a manual transmission would do.
