Default Trans leak

We have a leak from the front of the manual transmission. Its confirmed as the trans and not the rear main on the engine. Ive already ordered a Timken 1990 seal. They also have a repair sleeve available. Should I get that too. Anything else I should have on hand?

Since the transmission will be pulled anyway, I'd also inspect the throwout bearing (spin/feel/listen) and measure the clutch disc thickness if it was my truck. There should be minimum specification for clutch disc thickness in the repair manual https://www.mazdaminitruckin.com/service-manual

Would I replace the rear engine seal "just because" I was in there? I don't think so.....

On sealing the the front of the transmission I have a question. Watch this video of a guy disassembling a B2200 5spd. I'm interested in the part that begins at about 17 minutes in so start there. He pulls the housing that contains the shaft seal. You also see him pulling gasket material off of the housing surface. Is this a weather gasket to keep water out or is it also a necessary seal to keep oil in? I'm wondering if I can obtain a replacement gasket or will I need to make one. What do you think?

I think that I would try to find that gasket if you can. See your local Mazda dealership parts department......they should be able to get one in for you I would think.

I snooped around in the front of our spare transmission. That gasket is definitely needed

If not, get some sheet gasket from the parts store, trace out gasket from your used one. Use a punch or a drill to make the holes, then carefully cut.

The gasket appears to be readily available. Most references are to Miata but a few reference B2200. I actually found one on Amazon and it should be here Sunday. I’ll match it up when it gets here.

Jim Ellis Mazda has a reference to B2200 in that search query

Good to know that! Thanks!
It appears to be thinner than most of the sheet gasket material that I've seen in the auto parts stores also. Good job 90-B2200!

I think it’s a good idea to consider the thickness of the gasket because there is a very thin thrust washer that goes between the transmission case and front cover. Mine happens to be broken as I found it when I removed the cover. The way I see it, a thicker gasket would create a larger gap where the thrust washer resides. That could be a problem. So, whether you buy the correct gasket or make one, its thickness should be as close to stock as possible.
