R & R Timing Belt on B2200
Howdy Guys, I
just bought a 1991 B2200 and it has a rebuilt motor with 60k on it. From all I have read it is suggested that the belt be replaced every 60K
Auto shop by me wants $800 to do the job which includes a new water pump. That seems like a lot of $$$.... their rate is $85hr
Figuring $200 for belt and water pump that leaves $600 for labor and I can't see the job taking 7 hrs to do.
How long should it take a average mechanic to do a R&R of belt and water pump

They should have given you an itemized estimate. That way you will know how much for labor and parts. I have saved a bunch of money simply by buying the parts needed and letting shop do the work.

I'm not an average mechanic (I'm an analytical chemist), haven't even worked on vehicles professionally since 1974, and that was on old air-cooled VWs.
So when my 1988 B2200 water pump started leaking, and I was about 58K on the timing belt, it was time for me to do it myself. Basically, it took me 3 hours one Sunday morning, was my first timing belt job ever, and first time I ever did an "internal water pump". It's very straightforward, do NOT try to remove the big giant bolt (21 mm socket) in center of the lower pulley, take out the six smaller bolts (10mm socket). I used a Gates belt (I don't recommend a cheapie belt) and a Carquest water pump. That was May 2011, and I replaced the pistons, rings, and had the cylinder head done a few months later, but still run that same water pump and timing belt.
Anyway, see links below. This job was actually easier than I expected, and I did not have to remove or touch the distributor (other than remove the cap for TDC #1 position aid).
